Dolphins

Updated: Jan 4, 2022

once of the same tree

these leaves that the wind scatters

with a brittle sound

ashes on my plate

ashen this sight, yet at night

I swim with dolphins

yellow dots on soggy snow

last of the leaves the storm stripped

a tear on a torn web

the unsayable

tenderness of a sunset

I won't close my eyes

a face full of words

that are stronger if untold

this black silken night

my weakness for red

hair and green eyes, no secret

but I still won't tell

she, in my blood

sitting on my lap, her hands

the veins, roads to her

I reached the day's end

with the best of intentions

and empty hands

these golden glitters

I find in rooftop puddles

not the open sea

how can I be so

at peace with a life stripped bare

and yet so restless

wrapped in snow a beast

made of what it can't know

can't do and can't say

a night cold enough

to turn blue and lie still

playing dead with me

full moon tonight

the biggest, kindest I'm told

might surprise me yet

the goose seated near

the icy trail that I took

is a full person

child again, spent hours

alone with a book, mom's

ether everywhere

fire in a cup

I'll eat the new year with a crunch

if it pleases me
